Why complete a 360?

Chapter 21 “How to develop yourself to your full potential” suggests undertaking a review of your strengths and weaknesses.

Why?


What are my strengths? Most people think they know what they are good at. They are usually wrong. More often, people know what they are not good at – and even then more people are wrong than right. And yet, a person can perform only from strength. One cannot build performance on weaknesses, let alone on something one cannot do at all. Peter Drucker, Managing Oneself, Best of HBR 1999.

Do you know what your strengths are? Are you aware of your weaknesses? The real starting point for self-development, as with any other developmental activity, is to benchmark your current status as a manager. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

My own research into management and leadership effectiveness over the last 10 years has consistently found that:


  • Managers who regularly seek and get feedback on their performance, are amongst the better performing managers.

  • Managers who are accurately aware of their own strengths and weaknesses are seen as better leaders.

You can find out about your strengths and weaknesses by undertaking a 360 degree feedback survey. Questionnaires are completed by yourself, your manager and a selection of peers and team members to give you a 360 view of your performance.
